BJP Senior leader and former Governor of West Bengal and three-time Uttar Pradesh Assembly Speaker Shri Keshari Nath Tripathi is no more. He passed away at the age of 88 due to prolonged illness in Prayagraj on January 8.

The BJP National President Shri Jagat Prakash Nadda said,”The news of the demise of respected Keshari Nath Tripathi ji, a senior leader, former Governor of West Bengal, and a source of inspiration for all of us, is very sad. I extend my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family members and pray to God for the departed soul’s peace. Om Shanti!”

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed his condolences to the bereaved family on Twitter, saying that the death of the respected senior leader, senior member of the BJP family, and former Governor of West Bengal Shri Keshari Nath Tripathi is extremely sad. May Lord Shri Ram give place to the departed pious soul in his holy feet and give strength to the bereaved family members to bear the sorrow.

Apart from West Bengal, Shri Tripathi had held additional charge as the Governor of Bihar, Meghalaya, and Mizoram. He was hospitalised a few days ago after his fractured hand and for treatment of age-related ailments as well. He was, however, released from the hospital three days ago.

Born on November 10, 1934 in erstwhile Allahabad, Shri Tripathi was also a senior advocate at the Allahabad High Court. He joined RSS when he was just 12 and later switched to Bharatiya Jana Sangh. He was jailed in Naini Central Jail in 1953 for participating in the ‘Kashmir Andolan’ and again in 1990 for taking part in the Ram Janmabhoomi movement.

Shri Tripathi was elected MLA for the first time in 1977 from Jhunsi assembly constituency in Prayagraj district. He went on to win six more Assembly elections and his last victory was in 2002 from Allahabad South seat.
In a career spanning decades, Shri Tripathi was elected as the Speaker of the UP Assembly under different chief ministers including Shri Kalyan Singh, Shri Rajnath Singh, Shri Ram Prakash Gupta, Sushri Mayawati and Shri Mulayam Singh Yadav.
